Australia has launched BetStop, a national self-exclusion register designed to provide a unified platform for individuals seeking to limit their online gambling activities. The initiative, overseen by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), aims to address the fragmented nature of existing state-level programs.
BetStop allows users to exclude themselves from all licensed online gambling services for periods ranging from three months to a lifetime. Operators are required to verify user registration against the database before allowing access.
While the initiative has been widely praised, some stakeholders argue that it needs to be complemented by stricter advertising restrictions and more robust enforcement against illegal offshore operators.
